Some Mineral Oil Products Have a Food Rule — Sassafras Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Mineral Oil says to take it with food. If you take Sassafras on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Mineral Oil with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Mineral Oil products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Mineral Oil Used For?

Brand name: Kondremul Plain

Most mineral oil products are used to relieve occasional constipation. Rectal enema products — including Fleet, Leader Ready to Use Mineral Oil, Foster and Thrive Ready to Use Mineral oil, Enema, and Enema Mineral Oil — are also used for relief of fecal impaction (stool that is stuck and won't pass) and to remove residue left in the bowel after a barium procedure.

Humco Mineral Oil Light topical liquid is used to help treat and prevent diaper rash, protect chafed skin, and seal out wetness. HANHOO BlemishPatch is applied directly to skin concerns as a topical patch.
