Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), ondansetron (Zofran), paroxetine (Paxil), risperidone (Risperdal), tramadol (Ultram), venlafaxine (Effexor), and others.

Here's the twist with this combo product. The codeine part is actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6 before it can ease your pain. Lab and animal studies hint that a compound in Schizonepeta may slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, you might convert less codeine into its active form, so you could get weaker pain relief from this medicine.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: it's only from test tube and animal work, so this is more theory than proven fact. The aspirin and caffeine pieces aren't really affected. If you'd like to use Schizonepeta, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how well your pain is controlled.

Here's the piece that matters for this combo: the caffeine in your Anacin w/ Codeine is cleared from your body by an enzyme called CYP1A2. In animal and lab studies, a compound in Schizonepeta appears to slow that enzyme down. In theory, that means caffeine could hang around longer and feel stronger, so you might notice more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach.

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is. This is based only on lab and animal research, not real people, so the actual risk is probably small, especially with occasional use. The aspirin and codeine parts aren't the concern here. Still, if you take Schizonepeta regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

This combination pill blends aspirin, caffeine, and codeine. The piece worth talking about is the codeine. Codeine is what we call a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into morphine before it does much for your pain. While CYP2D6 handles that activation step, CYP3A4 also plays a role in processing codeine. The interaction on file suggests Schizonepeta might speed up (induce) CYP3A4.

If that happened, your body could shuffle codeine down a different path and you might get less pain relief than expected. Honestly though, this is based only on animal lab work, so it's theoretical and not proven in people. Occasional herbal use is unlikely to cause trouble, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.
