Carvedilol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), ondansetron (Zofran), paroxetine (Paxil), risperidone (Risperdal), tramadol (Ultram), venlafaxine (Effexor), and others.

Here's the gist for carvedilol: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear it from your body. Schizonepeta contains a compound (schizonepetin) that, in lab and animal studies, appears to slow that enzyme down. If that holds true in people, carvedilol could linger longer and its effects could stack up a bit.

With a beta-blocker like this, stronger effect usually means a lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, dizziness, or feeling tired or lightheaded, especially when standing up. I want to be honest though: this is only theoretical right now, based on animal data, not human studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Still, since carvedilol affects your heart, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Carvedilol Used For?

Carvedilol is used to treat three main conditions: mild-to-severe chronic heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), and reduced heart pumping function (left ventricular dysfunction) in people who have survived a heart attack. For heart failure, it is usually prescribed alongside other medications such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and digitalis to help people live longer and reduce the chance of hospital stays.

For people who have had a heart attack and whose heart is not pumping as well as it should, carvedilol is used to lower the risk of dying from heart-related causes. For high blood pressure, it can be used on its own or combined with other blood pressure medicines.
