Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), ondansetron (Zofran), paroxetine (Paxil), risperidone (Risperdal), tramadol (Ultram), venlafaxine (Effexor), and others.

Here's the gist: your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down clomipramine. In lab and animal studies, a compound in Schizonepeta appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, clomipramine could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects. With a tricyclic like this, that could show up as extra drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to keep this in perspective though. The evidence here is only test-tube and animal data, so it's mostly theoretical and may not matter at typical use. Still, before you pair them, run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can check your dose and other meds.

Here's the gist for Clomipramine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break this medicine down. A compound in Schizonepeta has been shown, in lab and animal studies only, to slow that enzyme. If that held true in people, Clomipramine could clear out more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness on standing, blurred vision, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical right now, with no solid human studies behind it. So don't panic. Still, since Clomipramine is a sensitive medicine to balance, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Schizonepeta. Don't change your dose on your own.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down clomipramine. In animal studies, a compound in Schizonepeta appears to speed that enzyme up. If that holds true in people, your liver could clear clomipramine a little faster, which might lower the amount in your blood and make it work less well for your OCD symptoms.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The only evidence comes from lab and animal research, not from real patients, so this is mostly theoretical. Clomipramine isn't a prodrug, so the worry would be weaker effect, not more side effects. Still, before adding this herb, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can watch how you're doing.

Clomipramine — sold as Anafranil and under the generic name Clomipramine Hydrochloride — is approved to treat obsessions and compulsions in people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This includes adults and children/adolescents ages 10 to 17.

To qualify for treatment, the obsessions or compulsions must cause significant distress, take up a lot of time, or noticeably interfere with work, school, or social life.
