Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with chloral hydrate and shepherd's purse. Chloral hydrate is a sedative, so its main job is to make you sleepy and calm. Some traditional reports suggest shepherd's purse may have a mild calming or sedative-like quality of its own. The concern is simply that the two together could add up, leaving you more drowsy, dizzy, foggy, or slow to wake than you'd expect.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical caution based on how these things may behave, not on strong human studies. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since chloral hydrate already hits you hard for sleep, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with this herb, especially if you notice extra grogginess.

About Shepherd's Purse

What is Shepherd's Purse?

Shepherd's Purse
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, wounds)
  • Mild diuretic
  • Digestive complaints
  • After-childbirth bleeding (traditional)

Shepherd's purse is a traditional herb most often used to help slow heavy menstrual bleeding and other minor bleeding, but solid human research is very limited. Because it may affect blood clotting, blood pressure, and the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy and used cautiously under professional guidance.
