Here's the gist for combining shepherd's purse with vigabatrin (Sabril). Shepherd's purse may have a mild calming or sedating quality, and vigabatrin can already make people feel drowsy, tired, dizzy, or a bit unsteady. Put them together and those effects could in theory add up, leaving you more sleepy or off-balance than usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one: it's theoretical, based on how the herb is thought to behave, not on solid human studies. Vigabatrin isn't a prodrug, so we're talking about overlapping sedation, not a change in how the drug is broken down. Since vigabatrin is a serious seizure medicine, don't start or stop anything on your own. Just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Shepherd's purse is a traditional herb most often used to help slow heavy menstrual bleeding and other minor bleeding, but solid human research is very limited. Because it may affect blood clotting, blood pressure, and the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy and used cautiously under professional guidance.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
