PSEUDOEPHEDRINE (Sudafed)

Theoretically, sodium bicarbonate may increase levels and adverse effects of pseudoephedrine.
In humans, intravenous or oral administration of sodium bicarbonate can increase urinary pH. Clinical evidence shows that urine alkalinization increases the serum elimination half-life of pseudoephedrine by approximately 10-fold. In one patient with persistently alkaline urine, treatment with pseudoephedrine resulted in hallucinations and personality changes.

Here's the deal with Actifed (which combines pseudoephedrine, the decongestant, plus triprolidine, an antihistamine) and baking soda. Your body clears pseudoephedrine partly by dumping it into your urine. Sodium bicarbonate makes your urine less acidic, and when that happens, your kidneys hold onto the pseudoephedrine longer instead of flushing it out. Studies show this can stretch out how long the drug sticks around quite a bit, so the stimulant effects pile up.

In real life that could mean more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, restlessness, or higher blood pressure. A rare case even reported hallucinations. An occasional antacid dose is usually no big deal, but regular or large amounts of baking soda are the concern. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.
