Indapamide falls under THIAZIDE DIURETICS — the group Sodium Bicarbonate interacts with.

Theoretically, sodium bicarbonate may increase the risk of hypokalemia in patients taking thiazide diuretics.
Thiazide diuretics increase urinary potassium excretion. Orally, use of excessive sodium bicarbonate (such as the intake of "tablespoons" of sodium bicarbonate daily or up to one box of baking soda weekly) has been associated with cases of hypokalemia. Furthermore, the most common complication of intravenous sodium bicarbonate is hypokalemia.

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take indapamide. This water pill already pushes your kidneys to flush out extra potassium, which is why your doctor may check your potassium levels now and then. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can do the same thing in large amounts, so stacking the two could, in theory, drop your potassium lower than you'd want.

Low potassium can leave you feeling tired, crampy, or weak, and in bigger drops it can throw off your heart rhythm. The good news: this concern comes from people using huge amounts of baking soda, like tablespoons a day. An occasional half-teaspoon for heartburn is much less of a worry. Baking soda is also very high in sodium, which fights what indapamide is doing for your blood pressure. Check with your pharmacist before using it regularly.

What Is Indapamide Used For?

Brand names: Lozol, Lozide

Indapamide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either on their own or together with other blood pressure medications. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of related complications.

Indapamide tablets are also used to treat salt and fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure. In certain cases, indapamide may also be appropriate during pregnancy when swelling is caused by a medical condition rather than normal pregnancy changes — but routine use in otherwise healthy pregnant women is not recommended.
