Torsemide falls under LOOP DIURETICS — the group Sodium Bicarbonate interacts with.

Theoretically, sodium bicarbonate may increase the risk of hypokalemia in patients taking loop diuretics.
Loop diuretics increase urinary potassium excretion. Orally, use of excessive sodium bicarbonate (such as the intake of "tablespoons" of sodium bicarbonate daily or up to one box of baking soda weekly) has been associated with cases of hypokalemia. Furthermore, the most common complication of intravenous sodium bicarbonate is hypokalemia.

Here's the thing with torsemide: it's a water pill that makes your kidneys flush out extra fluid and salt, but along the way it also pushes potassium out in your urine. That can drop your potassium level over time. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can do the same thing when taken in large amounts, so stacking the two could add up and lower your potassium even further.

Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. The good news: this concern is mostly theoretical and really applies to big, repeated doses (think tablespoons of baking soda or a box a week), not the occasional pinch for heartburn. Baking soda is also high in sodium, which can work against your blood pressure goals. Before using it regularly, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Torsemide Used For?

Brand names: Demadex, Soaanz

Torsemide tablets are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup causing swelling — associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease. Removing that extra fluid can relieve swelling and make breathing easier.

Torsemide tablets are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.
