CEFPODOXIME PROXETIL (Vantin)

Theoretically, sodium bicarbonate might reduce the levels and clinical effects of cefpodoxime.
Cefpodoxime proxetil is an oral prodrug that is de-esterified in the intestine to the active drug cefpodoxime. Drugs or supplements that increase gastric pH can inhibit the activation of cefpodoxime proxetil and reduce the peak plasma concentrations of cefpodoxime. In humans, taking sodium bicarbonate 12.6 grams orally along with cefpodoxime proxetil 200 mg reduces peak plasma concentrations and area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) of cefpodoxime by 35% to 50%.

Here's the key thing about Vantin (cefpodoxime proxetil): it's a prodrug. You swallow an inactive form, and your body needs stomach acid to help convert it into the active antibiotic that actually fights your infection. Cefpodoxime also absorbs best in an acidic environment.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a base, so it neutralizes that acid and raises your stomach pH. When the stomach is less acidic, your body absorbs less of the active drug. In one human study, a large dose of baking soda dropped cefpodoxime levels by about 35% to 50%. Lower levels can mean the antibiotic doesn't fully clear your infection, which is a real concern. If you use baking soda or antacids, ask your pharmacist about spacing them apart from your dose.

What Is Cefpodoxime Used For?

Brand name: Vantin

Cefpodoxime Proxetil treats mild to moderate bacterial infections in both adults and children. It is used for ear infections (acute otitis media), strep throat and tonsillitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute sinus infections (acute maxillary sinusitis), uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis), and uncomplicated gonorrhea.

For gonorrhea, Cefpodoxime Proxetil treats uncomplicated urethral and cervical infections in men and women, and uncomplicated ano-rectal infections in women. It has not been shown effective for throat (pharyngeal) gonorrhea infections in men or women, or for rectal gonorrhea in men.
