Sodium Oxybate falls under SODIUM-CONTAINING DRUGS — the group Sodium Bicarbonate interacts with.

Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related adverse effects.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium bicarbonate, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.

Here's the thing about Xyrem (sodium oxybate): it carries a surprising amount of sodium built right into each dose. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is also loaded with sodium. So this isn't about one changing how the other gets broken down. It's simply two big sources of sodium stacking up in your body at the same time.

For most healthy folks, an occasional pinch of baking soda for heartburn isn't a big deal. But if you take it regularly, the combined sodium can push you over recommended daily limits and, in some people, raise the risk of swelling, higher blood pressure, or fluid problems. This is a theoretical concern based on the math of sodium, not strong study data. If you have heart, kidney, or blood pressure issues, please check with your pharmacist before using both.

What Is Sodium Oxybate Used For?

Brand name: Xyrem

Sodium oxybate treats two major symptoms of narcolepsy: cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness triggered by emotion) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). It is available in several products, each approved for these uses.

Xyrem (oral solution) and the generic sodium oxybate oral solution are approved for cataplexy or EDS in patients with narcolepsy. Lumryz (extended-release oral suspension) is specifically approved for cataplexy or EDS in patients 7 years of age and older with narcolepsy. The generic sodium oxybate oral solution label does not include the pediatric indication due to marketing exclusivity held by Xyrem.
