Amiodarone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Spearmint interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of spearmint might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thing to know about amiodarone: it can be tough on the liver on its own, and your doctor likely already checks your liver enzymes (AST and ALT) with regular blood work while you're on it. The concern with spearmint is simply about not piling on extra liver stress.

This caution comes from animal studies where large amounts of spearmint tea, taken daily for a month, raised liver markers. That's a long way from a human result, and it has not been seen in people. Sipping spearmint tea or using it in food is very unlikely to be a problem. The theoretical worry is really about concentrated, high-dose spearmint supplements taken long term. If you're considering one of those, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so your liver labs can stay on their radar.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
