Why this applies to Haloperidol

Haloperidol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Haloperidol (Haldol): your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear it. Sulforaphane, the compound from broccoli, has shown two opposite effects in lab and animal studies. In some studies it slows this enzyme down, which could let haloperidol build up and bring on stronger side effects like drowsiness, muscle stiffness, restlessness, or tremors. In other studies a related compound actually speeds the enzyme up, which could lower haloperidol's levels and make it less effective.

The honest answer is that this hasn't been seen in real people, so it's mostly theoretical. Eating broccoli with dinner is very unlikely to matter. A concentrated sulforaphane supplement is the real question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

Here's the gist for haloperidol (Haldol). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this medication out of your system. In lab dishes and animal studies, sulforaphane has been shown to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, haloperidol could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, muscle stiffness, restlessness, or those involuntary movements antipsychotics can cause.

The important thing to know: this is only theoretical right now and has not been seen in actual patients. Eating broccoli at dinner is very unlikely to matter. A concentrated sulforaphane supplement is a different story, so run that by your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

In children, it is also used for severe combative or explosive behavior problems, and for hyperactivity with conduct disorders — but only when other treatments like therapy or non-antipsychotic medications have not worked.
