Why this applies to Propafenone

Propafenone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with broccoli-derived sulforaphane and your propafenone. Propafenone is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and lab and animal studies suggest sulforaphane can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, propafenone might build up a bit, which could mean more side effects like dizziness, a metallic taste, nausea, or in some cases changes to your heart rhythm. Confusingly, a related compound in broccoli may actually speed the enzyme up, so the real-world direction isn't clear.

The honest takeaway: this is theoretical, based only on lab and animal data, and hasn't been seen in humans. Eating broccoli is very unlikely to matter. Before starting a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor since propafenone is a heart rhythm drug.

About Propafenone

What Is Propafenone Used For?

Brand names: Rythmol, Arythmol

Propafenone is used to help control abnormal heart rhythms. It is prescribed to delay the return of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (episodic irregular heartbeats in the upper chambers) and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT, sudden fast heartbeats starting above the heart's lower chambers) — but only in people who do not have structural heart disease.

It is also used to treat life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias (dangerous fast rhythms starting in the heart's lower chambers). Because of serious safety concerns, it is not recommended for minor or non-life-threatening heart rhythm problems.
