Ticlopidine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Sweet Woodruff interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects of some anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and increase the risk of bleeding.
Sweet woodruff contains coumarin and coumarin derivatives. However, the levels of coumarin found in sweet woodruff are so low that clinically relevant effects are doubtful. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the gist: ticlopidine already keeps your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly how it lowers your stroke or clot risk. Sweet woodruff contains a natural compound called coumarin, which in theory can have a mild blood-thinning effect of its own. Stack the two together and the worry is a little extra bleeding, things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop.

Now, the reassuring part. This is a theoretical concern based on chemistry, not real patient cases, and the amount of coumarin in sweet woodruff is genuinely tiny. Clinically meaningful effects are doubtful, especially in small culinary amounts. Still, since ticlopidine is serious medicine, please run any sweet woodruff supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Ticlopidine Used For?

Brand names: Ticlid, Ticlopidine

  • Ticlopidine is used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have had a stroke or have had warning signs of a stroke and who cannot be treated with aspirin. Ticlopidine is also used along with aspirin to prevent blood clots from forming in coronary stents (metal tubes surgically placed in clogged blood vessels to improve blood flow). It works by preventing platelets (a type of blood cell) from collecting and forming clots.
