Phenobarbital, Phenytoin falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the thing about thuja and your phenobarbital/phenytoin combo: this isn't about your liver clearing the drug faster or slower. It's about thuja itself. Concentrated thuja products (especially the oil) contain thujone, a compound that can actually lower the seizure threshold and, in larger amounts, act as a nerve toxin. Since you take medicines specifically to prevent seizures, adding something that pushes in the opposite direction is the worry.

Honestly, this is theoretical and based mostly on anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so I don't want to scare you. But because seizure control matters so much, it's a sensible one to avoid. Please don't change your seizure meds. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before trying any thuja product.

Here's the concern with Thuja and your seizure medicines (this combo product pairs phenytoin with phenobarbital). Thuja, especially the oil, contains a compound called thujone that may actually lower the seizure threshold, meaning it could make seizures a little easier to trigger. Both of your medicines work to raise that threshold and keep seizures away, so in theory Thuja could push against what they're doing and make them feel less effective.

I'll be honest with you: this is mostly theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid human studies. Still, with seizure control there isn't much room to gamble. Before adding any Thuja product, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, and don't change your medication doses on your own.

What is Thuja?
