Venlafaxine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Thuja and venlafaxine (Effexor). Concentrated thuja products can contain thujone, a compound that may make the brain more prone to seizures. Venlafaxine, like many antidepressants, can already nudge your seizure threshold a little lower on its own. Stacking the two together could, in theory, raise that risk slightly.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and anecdotal, not something proven in solid human studies. Culinary or homeopathic amounts are unlikely to matter much, but undiluted thuja oil is where the real thujone risk lies. To play it safe, I'd avoid concentrated thuja while on venlafaxine, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
