Chlorothiazide falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the simple version: this is an absorption issue, and it's a minor one. When you swallow a thyroid extract pill, other things in your stomach at that moment can grab onto the thyroid hormone and keep some of it from being absorbed. Chlorothiazide (Diuril) is a water pill, not a thyroid drug, so it isn't being changed by your thyroid extract at all. The concern runs the other direction: taking them at the same time could slightly lower how much thyroid hormone gets into you.

An easy fix is spacing them out. Many people take thyroid first thing on an empty stomach and other pills like Diuril later. Since OTC thyroid extract is unpredictable to begin with, please check timing and your overall thyroid plan with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Chlorothiazide

What Is Chlorothiazide Used For?

Brand name: Diuril

Chlorothiazide is used to reduce fluid buildup (edema) linked to conditions such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis (hepatic cirrhosis), and certain kidney disorders — including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. It is also used when edema is caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy.

The oral suspension (Diuril) is additionally approved to treat high blood pressure, either on its own or alongside other blood pressure medications. The intravenous forms — including Sodium Diuril, Chlorothiazide Sodium, and Chlorothiazide injection products — are reserved for treating edema in patients who cannot take oral medication or in emergency situations; these intravenous products are not approved for high blood pressure management.
