Amikacin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.

Theoretically, tragacanth might alter absorption of oral drugs.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here is some good news that should ease your mind. The interaction we have on file talks about tragacanth's gel-forming fiber possibly slowing or changing how oral medications get absorbed from your gut. Amikacin doesn't work that way. It is given as an injection (or, with the Arikayce brand, breathed into the lungs through a nebulizer), so it never travels through your stomach or intestines for tragacanth to grab onto.

Because the two don't meet in the digestive tract, there really isn't a realistic absorption clash here. This concern is theoretical and based on how the fiber behaves, not on actual reports with amikacin. Still, since amikacin is a serious antibiotic, it never hurts to mention any supplement you take to your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Amikacin Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Amikin, Arikayce

Arikayce is approved for adults with refractory Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease — a serious bacterial lung infection that has not responded to at least 6 consecutive months of a standard multidrug antibiotic regimen. It is used as part of a combination treatment plan, not on its own.

This approval is limited: Arikayce is intended only for adults who have few or no other treatment options. It is not recommended for patients whose MAC lung disease has not yet failed standard therapy.
