ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Dextromethorphan
Dextromethorphan falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with tragacanth and your cough medicine: tragacanth is basically a thick, gel-forming fiber. When it swells up in your stomach and gut, it can grab onto whatever else is in there, including a dose of dextromethorphan. In theory that gel could slow down or change how much of the medicine your body absorbs, which might make your cough relief feel weaker or just unpredictable.
I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not from real studies in people. To stay on the safe side, a simple fix is to take your dextromethorphan first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before taking tragacanth. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.
