This combination product packs a couple of ingredients that already make you drowsy, mainly the hydrocodone (an opioid) and the chlorpheniramine (a sedating antihistamine). The concern with tree turmeric is simple: in animal studies, its berberine seemed to have a calming, sedative effect. Stacked on top of medicines that already slow down the brain, the worry is that the sleepiness could add up.
In real life that might mean feeling extra groggy, foggy, dizzy, or slow to react, which matters more if you drive or are older. I'll be honest though, this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, not strong human data. Still, since this medicine contains an opioid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding tree turmeric.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This combo product (Hycomine Compound) is worth a closer look because of the hydrocodone in it. Hydrocodone is a bit of a special case: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to convert it into hydromorphone, a more potent pain reliever. Berberine, the active piece of tree turmeric, may gently slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could mean slightly less of the strong painkilling effect, since less is being turned into its active form.
Keep in mind this is mostly lab and early human data, so it's a theoretical concern, not a sure thing. Casual culinary amounts likely won't matter much, but concentrated berberine supplements are stronger. Before pairing them, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your pain relief feels weaker than expected.

In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
This combo pill has a lot going on, but the piece that matters here is the hydrocodone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process it. Berberine, the active part of tree turmeric, appears to slow that enzyme down. If hydrocodone gets cleared more slowly, more of it can hang around, which may lead to stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or in larger amounts slowed breathing.
The evidence that berberine blocks CYP3A4 is real but still fairly early, and most people won't run into trouble. Still, since this product already contains a narcotic, I'd play it safe. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing tree turmeric with this medicine, and don't change either one on your own.
