Here's the simple version: defibrotide is a strong clot-preventing medicine given in the hospital for a serious liver complication after a stem-cell transplant. Tree turmeric contains berberine, and in lab and animal studies berberine seemed to make platelets (the cells that help blood clot) stickier and slower to clump. Put the two together and you could, in theory, tip the scales toward more bleeding.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It comes from test tubes and animals, not people, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. That said, defibrotide is a powerful drug used in a fragile situation, so I wouldn't add tree turmeric on your own. Please run it by your transplant team or pharmacist first.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
