These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 3Why this applies to Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium
Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with Aleve PM: it already contains diphenhydramine, the same sedating antihistamine found in many nighttime products. That's what makes you drowsy. Animal studies hint that berberine, the main active compound in tree turmeric, may have its own calming, sedative effect. So in theory, taking the two together could stack that drowsiness, leaving you groggier, dizzier, or more out of it than you expect.
I want to be honest though: this is based on lab and animal research, not strong human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, if you tend to feel knocked out by Aleve PM, go easy and check with your pharmacist before pairing it with a berberine supplement.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2C9.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Aleve PM combines naproxen (a pain and inflammation reliever) with diphenhydramine (a sedating antihistamine to help you sleep). The naproxen part is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Berberine, the active piece of tree turmeric, may slow that enzyme down a bit. In plain terms, your body could hang onto naproxen a little longer, which might bump up its effects and side effects.
With naproxen, that usually means more stomach upset, heartburn, or in some cases an increased risk of stomach bleeding, especially with regular use. Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical and based on weak evidence, so it may not amount to much for occasional doses. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, particularly if you take it often.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
3 of 3Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.
In vitro and animal research suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Aleve PM is a combo of naproxen (an NSAID pain reliever) and diphenhydramine (an antihistamine that makes you sleepy). The piece that matters here is the naproxen. Like other NSAIDs, naproxen already nudges up bleeding risk on its own because it makes platelets a little less sticky and can irritate the stomach lining.
Tree turmeric (its active part, berberine) has shown in lab and animal studies that it may also slow platelets from clumping. Put the two together and, in theory, you could see a bit more bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset. This is only weak, theoretical evidence, so don't panic. Still, if you take Aleve PM often or have stomach or bleeding concerns, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
