Tree Turmeric + Dronabinol
Dronabinol brand names: Marinol, Syndros.
Dronabinol falls into 2 drug categories that Tree Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Dronabinol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Dronabinol
Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2C9.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear dronabinol out of your system. Berberine, the active ingredient in tree turmeric, appears to slow that enzyme down. If it's working less efficiently, dronabinol can hang around longer and build up, which means you might feel its effects more strongly than expected.
For dronabinol, that could show up as extra drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, a racing heartbeat, or a stronger "high" or anxious feeling. This is mostly theoretical and based on limited evidence, so I don't want to alarm you, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially since concentrated berberine supplements are much stronger than any culinary amount.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Dronabinol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with dronabinol and tree turmeric. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break dronabinol down and clear it out. The berberine in tree turmeric can moderately slow that enzyme, so dronabinol may hang around at higher levels than usual. Dronabinol is active as-is (not a prodrug), so more of it in your system tends to mean a stronger effect.
Practically, that could show up as more drowsiness, dizziness, a faster or pounding heartbeat, confusion, or that "high" or anxious feeling some people get. The concern is real but the human data is still fairly limited, so don't panic. Before combining them, just check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can watch for these effects or adjust things if needed.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dronabinol page
“A glass of grapefruit juice can push dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros), the prescription form of THC used for chemotherapy nausea and appetite loss, to higher blood levels than intended, amplifying dizziness, sedation, and its mind-altering effects. That is one of three major-rated interactions among the 151 supplements and herbs on file,…”

- Blood sugar support
- High cholesterol
- Digestive complaints
- Skin and eye conditions
- Antimicrobial uses
- Liver support
Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Early research suggests possible benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality human evidence is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Dronabinol
What Is Dronabinol Used For?
Brand names: Marinol, Syndros
Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.
Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
