Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for you. Your body clears lesinurad using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down, so theoretically lesinurad could build up a bit more than usual and hang around longer.

What might that look like? Lesinurad already carries a known risk of kidney problems, especially at higher exposure, which is exactly why it's only meant to be taken alongside a xanthine oxidase inhibitor and with plenty of fluids. Higher levels could nudge that kidney risk up. To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on limited evidence, and small culinary amounts are unlikely to matter much more than concentrated berberine supplements. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
