Tronadora and Metformin, Rosiglitazone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Metformin, Rosiglitazone

Metformin, Rosiglitazone falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Tronadora interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of tronadora and antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Clinical research suggests that a combination of tronadora and Guazuma ulmifolia reduce levels of fasting glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes, including those already taking antidiabetes agents. The effect of tronadora alone is unknown. Animal research is conflicting.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Avandamet combines two diabetes medicines, metformin and rosiglitazone, both of which work to lower your blood sugar. Tronadora is a folk-remedy plant tea that some small studies suggest may nudge blood sugar down too. Stack the two together and the worry is simple: your sugar could drop lower than intended. That's called hypoglycemia, and it can leave you shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or confused.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The evidence is thin and partly theoretical, and the studies that showed an effect actually paired tronadora with another herb, so tronadora's effect on its own isn't really known. Still, since it's about your blood sugar, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your readings.

“Avandamet pairs metformin with rosiglitazone to manage type 2 diabetes, and its supplement list calls for genuine care rather than a quick skim. About Tronadora

What is Tronadora?

  • Blood sugar control / diabetes
  • Digestive complaints
  • Mild fever
  • Yeast or fungal concerns
  • Traditional 'tonic' use

Tronadora (Tecoma stans) is a flowering shrub used in Mexican and Latin American folk medicine, most often as a tea for diabetes and digestive complaints. Human evidence is very limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it may affect blood sugar and its safety is not well studied, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
