Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combo product that matters here is the codeine, which is an opioid pain reliever that can make you feel drowsy and relaxed. Yerba mansa has been thought to have a mild calming, sedative-type quality of its own. So the concern is simply that pairing the two could add up, leaving you sleepier, foggier, or more sluggish than you'd expect, with slower breathing in stronger combinations.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical caution based on how these things work, not on solid human studies, so it isn't a reason to panic. Still, if you take this medicine and want to try yerba mansa, go easy, avoid driving until you know how you feel, and run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
