Cissus Quadrangularis Drug Interactions, Uses, Effectiveness, Safety & More
What is this page for?
First and foremost: how Cissus Quadrangularis interacts with medications. The heart of this page is the interaction list — every drug Cissus Quadrangularis is known to interact with, and how serious each one is.
But these pages have grown well beyond that into a full monograph — what Cissus Quadrangularis is, what people use it for and how strong the evidence is, its safety and side effects, and answers to the questions we’re asked most — written and reviewed by the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases, not medical advice, and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Severity — How Serious It Can Be
- Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
- Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
- Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
- No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.
Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented
- Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
- Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
- Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Cissus Quadrangularis: Uses, Safety & Side Effects
Cissus quadrangularis is a traditional vine used mainly for bone health, joint pain, and weight management. Most of the supporting evidence comes from animal studies and a small number of human trials, so its benefits are not firmly proven. It appears reasonably well tolerated in the short term, but people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing chronic conditions should talk to a doctor or pharmacist first.

Overview
Cissus quadrangularis is a climbing vine that belongs to the grape family (Vitaceae). It is sometimes called veldt grape or adamant creeper. It grows in warmer parts of the world, including India, Africa, and parts of Asia.
The plant has a long history in traditional medicine systems, especially in India, where it has been used to help broken bones heal and to ease digestive problems. Today it is sold as a dietary supplement in capsules, tablets, powders, and extracts. Some products are also applied to the skin.
How it works
Cissus quadrangularis contains a mix of natural compounds, including flavonoids, plant steroids, vitamin C, and antioxidants. These substances are thought to be behind its possible effects.
In laboratory and animal studies, the plant appears to encourage the activity of bone-building cells (osteoblasts) and reduce the activity of cells that break down bone (osteoclasts). It may also help lower inflammation and protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals.
It is important to remember that most of these mechanisms come from test-tube and animal research. We do not yet know how strongly these effects translate to people.

People with diabetes should use caution, since the plant may affect blood sugar. Those with any chronic medical condition should check with a doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Side effects
Reported side effects are usually mild and may include headache, gas, diarrhea, dry mouth, or upset stomach.
Serious side effects have not been commonly reported, but because long-term and large studies are lacking, the full safety picture is not known. Stop using it and contact a healthcare provider if you notice an allergic reaction or any unusual or severe symptoms.

There is no official, standardized dose for Cissus quadrangularis. Products differ widely in their strength and how they are prepared, which makes a single recommended dose hard to give.
The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the suggested amount. A pharmacist or doctor can help you decide whether a product and dose make sense for you, especially if you take other medicines or have health conditions.
