Chaparral is documented as unsafe for oral use. It carries a history of serious liver toxicity — including jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, and in severe cases, cirrhosis, acute hepatitis, and liver failure requiring transplant.

Kidney damage has also been reported. The compound nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) in chaparral is thought to be responsible for this toxicity.
