Gentian Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gentian against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gentian rhizome with root extract. Gentian root has a long history in herbal medicine and is prepared here as a liquid extract using cane alcohol and distilled water.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that gentian works reliably for wound healing, obesity, rhinosinusitis (sinus inflammation), or gastritis (stomach inflammation)—the data on each of those is insufficient to rate it. If you're thinking about gentian for one of those reasons, there's not a solid foundation in the research we have on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can irritate your stomach. In a study of patients taking gentian tincture alongside turmeric and ginger for low appetite related to cancer, some participants developed nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating—six stopped because of nausea alone.
The safety data on gentian in pregnancy is not strong enough, so it's best avoided if you're pregnant. There isn't enough reliable information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so avoid it then as well.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Blood pressure medications (antihypertensives)—such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and diuretics—are the main class to double-check. Gentian can lower your blood pressure, so combining it with these drugs could cause hypotension (blood pressure that's too low).
Run your specific medications through the checker before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gentian might be worth considering if you're interested in its traditional uses, but the scientific evidence for it is weak across the board. The main caution is if you take blood pressure medication—you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first, since gentian can lower blood pressure itself.
Talk it over with your healthcare provider before adding it, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a sensitive stomach.

Gentian by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gentian Herb Pharm Liquid contains gentian rhizome, which interacts with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives).
The concern is moderate: gentian can relax blood vessel walls and lower blood pressure on its own, so combining it with drugs that do the same thing might push your pressure too low.
