Maxi 5M contains five active ingredients. Biotin is a B vitamin that supports hair, skin, and nail health.
Two live-culture probiotics — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are designed to support digestive and immune function. Apple Pectin is a type of soluble fiber that may help with cholesterol levels.
Slippery Elm Powder is an herbal extract traditionally used for digestive comfort. The powder also includes inactive ingredients like mannitol, silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, digestive enzymes (bromelain, papain, lipase, amylase, protease), sucralose, dextrose, maltodextrin, sodium citrate, and acacia gum.

Evidence for the ingredients in Maxi 5M is mixed. Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, but evidence it helps with multiple sclerosis or seborrheic dermatitis is weak.
The probiotics — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Apple Pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol.
For the remaining uses listed on the label — prediabetes, respiratory infections, hay fever, anxiety, and others — the evidence we hold is either insufficient to rate or points toward ineffectiveness.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin and Apple Pectin are generally well tolerated, even at higher doses. Biotin is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation.
High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea; one isolated case report linked very high doses of biotin combined with other supplements to a rare lung inflammation, though the cause is unclear. Apple Pectin may cause mild gas, loose stools, or cramping, and allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but possible in sensitive individuals.
The live-culture probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults but should be used cautiously in people with weakened immune systems — in rare cases, these organisms have caused serious infection in critically ill patients. Mild bloating and flatulence can occur.
Slippery Elm Powder has limited safety data; it's generally well tolerated short-term but not well studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so check with your doctor before use in these situations. Topically, slippery elm can cause contact dermatitis or allergic reactions in sensitive people.

Slippery Elm Powder
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, slippery elm may slow the absorption and reduce serum levels of oral drugs.
Slippery elm inner bark contains mucilage, which may interfere with the absorption of orally administered drugs.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Apple Pectin
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
