Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.

Here's the thing about pairing 5-HTP with Fintepla (fenfluramine): both nudge serotonin in the same direction. Fenfluramine works partly by boosting serotonin activity in the brain, and 5-HTP is a direct raw material your body turns into serotonin. So stacking them could pile serotonin on top of serotonin.

There are really two concerns. One is simple sleepiness, since 5-HTP has caused drowsiness in studies and fenfluramine can already make a child tired. The other, which I'd weigh more heavily, is too much serotonin (think agitation, fast heartbeat, shivering, or sweating). This is based on how these compounds behave, not hard trial data, so it's a theoretical caution. Please loop in your child's doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Fenfluramine (Fintepla) works by boosting serotonin activity in the brain, and 5-HTP is a direct building block your body turns into serotonin. So when you put the two together, you're pushing serotonin in the same direction from two angles. That overlap could, in theory, raise the risk of too much serotonin (what we call serotonin syndrome), which can show up as agitation, a racing heart, shivering, sweating, muscle twitching, or feeling confused.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this concern is theoretical, based on how these substances work, and serotonin syndrome from 5-HTP hasn't actually been reported in people. Still, since Fintepla is a seizure medicine for a child with a serious condition, please don't add 5-HTP without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Fenfluramine Used For?

Brand name: Fintepla

Fintepla (fenfluramine oral solution) is approved to treat seizures associated with Dravet syndrome (DS) and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in patients 2 years of age and older. It is used alongside other antiseizure medications.

Both conditions are severe, often hard-to-control forms of epilepsy that typically begin in childhood. Fintepla is available only through a restricted program called the Fintepla REMS because of serious heart-related risks.
