Amiodarone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for amiodarone: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear it out. Lab studies hint that the beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca can block that enzyme. If that happened in a real person, amiodarone could build up higher than expected, which might mean more of its known side effects, things like a slow heart rate, dizziness, low blood pressure, or worsening rhythm problems.

That said, this is only a theoretical, test-tube concern, not something proven in people. Still, amiodarone is a tricky drug where small changes matter, and ayahuasca carries its own serious risks. I wouldn't combine them without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
