Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Reyataz (atazanavir): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear it. Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline compounds (like harmine) that may slow that same enzyme down. If atazanavir gets broken down more slowly, levels in your blood could creep up, which can mean more of its known side effects, such as that yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice from high bilirubin), nausea, headache, or heart rhythm changes.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is theoretical, seen only in lab dish studies, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. That said, ayahuasca is risky on its own and interacts with many drugs. Please don't change your HIV regimen, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.

About Atazanavir

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
