Ayahuasca and Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP2D6 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine and harmaline. In vitro research suggests that the beta-carboline alkaloids might inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Byvalson combines two blood pressure medicines. The part to watch here is nebivolol, a beta-blocker that your body clears using a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Ayahuasca contains compounds (harmine and harmaline) that may slow this enzyme down. If that happens, nebivolol could build up higher than usual, which might push your heart rate and blood pressure too low. Think dizziness, lightheadedness, unusual tiredness, or a slow pulse. The valsartan piece isn't the main concern for this particular interaction.

Honestly, this is only seen in lab studies so far, not in real people, so we can't say how strong it is in everyday life. That said, ayahuasca itself carries serious risks on its own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.
