In vitro and animal research suggests that Baikal skullcap binds to GABA-A receptors and causes sedation. Theoretically, Baikal skullcap might cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects when used concomitantly with drugs with sedative properties. Preliminary clinical research has not identified clinically relevant sedation after use of Baikal skullcap; however, a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted.

Here's the short version: both Xanax (alprazolam) and Baikal skullcap can have a calming, sedating effect, so stacking them together could in theory add up. Alprazolam already works by quieting overactive signals in the brain through GABA-A receptors, and lab and animal studies suggest baicalin from skullcap may nudge those same receptors. Combine them and you might feel a little extra drowsiness, grogginess, or slowed thinking.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes mostly from test-tube and animal research, and early human studies haven't shown meaningful sedation from skullcap itself. So the risk is considered minor and unlikely. Still, since alprazolam is potent, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this herb.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
