In vitro and animal research suggests that Baikal skullcap binds to GABA-A receptors and causes sedation. Theoretically, Baikal skullcap might cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects when used concomitantly with drugs with sedative properties. Preliminary clinical research has not identified clinically relevant sedation after use of Baikal skullcap; however, a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted.

Here's the gist with Baikal skullcap and secobarbital (Seconal). In test tube and animal studies, this herb seems to gently nudge the same calming GABA pathway in the brain that secobarbital works on. Since secobarbital is already a strong sedative for sleep, the worry is that pairing them could add up and leave you more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than expected, with slower breathing being the bigger concern with barbiturates.

That said, this is a theoretical caution. The evidence is weak (mostly lab and animal data), and early human studies haven't shown meaningful extra sedation from the herb. Secobarbital itself isn't a prodrug, so nothing flips here. Still, because barbiturates are powerful, I'd run any plan to combine them past your pharmacist or doctor first.
