Here's the simple version: bay leaf and metformin both nudge your blood sugar in the same direction (down). Metformin isn't a prodrug, so there's no fancy enzyme flip happening here. The concern is just additive. If bay leaf in supplement form gently lowers your glucose while metformin is already doing its job, the two together could push your sugar lower than expected.

The honest truth is this is mostly theoretical, based on how bay leaf behaves in the lab and a few small studies. The bay leaf you toss in a soup pot is not going to cause trouble. Concentrated capsules or extracts are the ones to watch. If you use them, keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy, and check your glucose more often.
