Guanabenz Acetate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Betony interacts with.

Theoretically, betony might have additive effects with blood pressure lowering drugs due to hypotensive activity of the glycosides found in betony. It might also interfere with the activity of pressor drugs. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: betony has been thought to gently lower blood pressure on its own. Since guanabenz (Wytensin) already works hard to bring your pressure down, pairing the two could, in theory, push your blood pressure a little lower than intended. Guanabenz isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about your body activating it differently. It's just two things tugging in the same direction.

If your pressure dipped too far, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand, drowsiness, or feeling unusually tired, which are already common guanabenz side effects. Honestly though, this concern rests on theory and the herb's chemistry, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding betony, and have them keep an eye on your readings.

What Is Guanabenz Used For?

  • Guanabenz is used to treat high blood pressure. It is in a class of medications called centrally acting alpha2A-adrenergic receptor agonists. Guanabenz works by decreasing your heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
