Why this applies to Fexofenadine

Fexofenadine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, breadfruit might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes; until more is known, use with caution. In vitro, the breadfruit constituent artocarpin can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. Also, animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can weakly inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. However, it is unclear if this inhibitory activity causes a clinically meaningful effect on the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone), sertraline (Zoloft), and many others.

Here's the good news on this one: the worry on file is about breadfruit possibly slowing down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. But fexofenadine (Allegra) barely uses that pathway at all. It's mostly handled by transporter proteins in your gut and kidneys, not CYP3A4, so this particular concern doesn't really apply to Allegra the way it might to other medicines on that list.

On top of that, the evidence here is very thin, just lab and animal studies, and nobody has shown it matters in real people. Eating breadfruit as a food is unlikely to do anything to your Allegra. If you're using concentrated breadfruit leaf teas or extracts for a health condition, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things. No need to change anything on your own.

What Is Fexofenadine Used For?

Brand name: Allegra

Fexofenadine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other upper respiratory allergies, including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

Several products — including Allegra Hives 24hr tablets — are specifically used to reduce hives (urticaria) and relieve the itching that comes with them. Keep in mind that fexofenadine will not prevent hives or stop an allergic skin reaction from happening in the first place.
