Animal research suggests that Brussels sprout can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity. Theoretically, Brussels sprout might increase the clearance and decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the honest picture with this cold and flu combo (Coricidin HBP). The concern on file is that Brussels sprouts may gently speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. If a medicine leans on that enzyme, your body could clear it a little faster, which might make it work a bit less. In theory, that could slightly soften relief from the cough suppressant (dextromethorphan) or the antihistamine, meaning a touch less drowsiness or symptom control.

But take a breath. This is based only on lab and animal research, not real people, and none of these three ingredients depend heavily on CYP1A2 anyway. Normal food amounts of Brussels sprouts are very unlikely to matter. If you ever feel your medicine isn't doing much, just check in with your pharmacist.

Theoretically, these foods might also lower levels of other drugs that are metabolized through glucuronide conjugation, including acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) and oxazepam (Serax), haloperidol (Haldol), lamotrigine (Lamictal), morphine (MS Contin, Roxanol), zidovudine (AZT, Retrovir), and others.

This Coricidin HBP combo packs three ingredients, but the one tied to this interaction is acetaminophen, the fever and pain reducer. Your body clears acetaminophen partly through a process called glucuronidation. Eating a lot of Brussels sprouts (and cabbage) seems to speed that process up a bit, so in theory it could nudge acetaminophen out of your system a touch faster and make it slightly less effective at easing your aches and fever.

Honestly, this is a small, mostly theoretical concern, and normal amounts of veggies at dinner are very unlikely to matter. The chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan aren't really involved here. Just take the product as directed, and if your cold symptoms aren't responding, check in with your pharmacist or doctor rather than doubling up.

A cabbage and Brussels sprout-containing diet can increase metabolism and decrease levels of acetaminophen. In clinical research, a diet that includes daily consumption of cabbage and Brussels sprout decreases acetaminophen levels by as much as 16%. This appears to occur due to a boost of elimination through glucuronide conjugation.

This combo product (Coricidin HBP Flu) contains acetaminophen for fever and aches, plus chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan. The piece that interacts with Brussels sprouts is the acetaminophen. Compounds in cruciferous veggies like Brussels sprouts and cabbage can gently speed up one of the pathways your liver uses to clear acetaminophen (called glucuronidation). In a clinical study, eating these vegetables daily lowered acetaminophen levels by about 16%.

In plain terms, that means a slightly smaller amount of acetaminophen may be working for you, so your fever or aches might not be quite as well controlled. The effect is modest, and a normal serving of veggies at dinner is unlikely to cause a problem. If you're relying on this medicine and it doesn't seem to be helping, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
