Caffeine and Mestranol, Norethindrone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Caffeine interacts with whole categories of medication. Mestranol, Norethindrone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Caffeine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Mestranol, Norethindrone

Mestranol, Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Caffeine interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here the birth control pill (the estrogen mestranol plus the progestin norethindrone) is acting on caffeine, not the other way around. Estrogens can mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme that clears caffeine from your body. So while you're on this pill, that morning coffee or tea may linger a little longer than usual.

What that can feel like is being a bit more wired than normal: jitters, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. Honestly though, this is rated minor and is mostly theoretical, so most people won't notice much. If caffeine seems to hit you harder, simply easing back on coffee usually does the trick. Any questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Mestranol, Norethindrone also falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, contraceptive drugs might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Oral contraceptives decrease the rate of caffeine clearance by 40-65%.

Here's the thing to know about this combo: the interaction runs from your birth control pill toward the caffeine, not the other way around. The estrogen in Necon 1/50 (mestranol/norethindrone) slows down the liver enzyme that clears caffeine, so caffeine tends to hang around in your body longer. Studies show clearance can drop by roughly 40 to 65 percent.

In real life, that means your usual coffee or energy drink may hit harder and last longer. You might notice more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, or trouble falling asleep. Your pill still works fine for preventing pregnancy, and this is rated minor. If caffeine starts bothering you, simply easing back on it usually does the trick. Chat with your pharmacist if you're unsure.
