Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination medicine (sold as Isocom) blends acetaminophen for pain, dichloralphenazone, which has a mild calming, sleep-promoting effect, and isometheptene to ease blood-vessel-related headache pain. The dichloralphenazone piece can already make some people feel drowsy or a little foggy.

Here's the concern with the dream herb: Calea zacatechichi has shown calming, brain-slowing effects in animals and some people, so pairing it with this headache medicine could, in theory, add to that sleepiness. You might feel extra drowsy, dizzy, or slow to react, which matters if you're driving. To be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how each works, not strong proof, and the risk is rated minor. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
