Cannabidiol (cbd) and Amlodipine Benzoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Amlodipine Benzoate

Amlodipine Benzoate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabidiol (cbd) interacts with.

Cannabidiol may increase levels of drugs that are metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research shows that cannabidiol inhibits CYP3A4. In human studies and case reports, cannabidiol has been associated with an increase in plasma levels of the CYP3A4 substrates zonisamide, tacrolimus, everolimus, citalopram, midazolam, and methadone.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence A

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for you. Your blood pressure medicine, amlodipine, gets cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. CBD can slow that enzyme down. When the enzyme works slower, more amlodipine can hang around in your bloodstream, which means its effects get a little stronger than expected.

With amlodipine specifically, that could show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, swelling in your ankles or feet, or your blood pressure dropping lower than planned. Amlodipine isn't a prodrug, so CBD doesn't weaken it, it nudges it in the stronger direction. This is a real, reasonably likely interaction, so before you combine them, check with your pharmacist or doctor. They may simply want to watch your blood pressure for a while.

About Amlodipine

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Katerzia

Amlodipine lowers high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or with other blood pressure or angina medicines.

It is also used for chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina), and angiographically documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or an ejection fraction below 40%. The Sdamlo oral solution label lists the high blood pressure use for adults and children 6 years and older, and the coronary artery disease uses for adults.
