Why this applies to Selexipag

Selexipag falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabidiol (cbd) interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabidiol might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C8.
In vitro research shows that cannabidiol inhibits CYP2C8. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, concomitant use of cannabidiol with CYP2C8 substrates might increase the risk for adverse effects from these substrates.

Here's the situation with CBD and Uptravi (selexipag). Your body clears selexipag using a liver enzyme called CYP2C8. Lab studies suggest CBD can slow that same enzyme down. If that happens, selexipag (and its active form) could build up a bit more than usual, which may make its typical side effects more noticeable, things like headache, jaw pain, flushing, nausea, diarrhea, or muscle and leg pain.

The honest part: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, and it hasn't actually been reported in people taking these two together. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since CBD products vary a lot in strength, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

About Selexipag

What Is Selexipag Used For?

Brand name: Uptravi

Selexipag tablets are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group I) — a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. The goal is to slow the disease from getting worse and to reduce the chances of being hospitalized because of PAH.

Uptravi (selexipag) tablets are approved for both adults and children aged 2 years and older. Uptravi for injection (intravenous) is also available for adult patients who are already on Uptravi tablets but temporarily cannot take medicine by mouth.
