Selexipag falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.

Here's a quick heads-up on pairing Danshen with Uptravi (selexipag). Danshen has been reported to thin the blood and slow clotting a bit. Selexipag itself isn't a blood thinner in the usual sense, but it relaxes blood vessels and can come with side effects like flushing, headache, jaw pain, and occasionally a higher tendency to bleed or bruise. Stacking Danshen on top could, in theory, nudge that bleeding risk a little higher.

Honestly, this concern rests on weak, mostly animal and anecdotal evidence, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since this is theoretical and not well studied with selexipag specifically, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before starting Danshen rather than deciding on your own.

Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.

Here's the thing to know if you're on Uptravi (selexipag) for pulmonary arterial hypertension. This medicine already works by relaxing and widening your blood vessels to ease blood flow through your lungs. Danshen, in animal studies, seems to lower blood pressure too. So the worry is that stacking the two could add up and push your pressure down a little more than you'd want.

If that happened, you might notice things like dizziness, lightheadedness, a flushed feeling, headache, or feeling faint when you stand up. Now, I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal research, not solid human studies. Still, before you add Danshen, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can watch your blood pressure and symptoms.

What Is Selexipag Used For?

Brand name: Uptravi

Selexipag tablets are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group I) — a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. The goal is to slow the disease from getting worse and to reduce the chances of being hospitalized because of PAH.

Uptravi (selexipag) tablets are approved for both adults and children aged 2 years and older. Uptravi for injection (intravenous) is also available for adult patients who are already on Uptravi tablets but temporarily cannot take medicine by mouth.
