Chrysin and Niacin, Simvastatin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS

Why this applies to Niacin, Simvastatin

Niacin, Simvastatin falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Chrysin interacts with.

Theoretically, chrysin might increase the clearance of drugs that are UGT1A1 substrates, thereby reducing their effectiveness.
In vitro research suggests that chrysin might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1).

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here is the short version on combining chrysin with Simcor (the niacin and simvastatin combo). The only concern on file is theoretical and comes from test-tube research, not from people. In those lab studies, chrysin seemed to speed up a processing enzyme called UGT1A1, which could, in theory, clear certain drugs out a bit faster and make them slightly less effective.

In real life, this matters very little here. Simvastatin and niacin are not mainly handled by that enzyme, the evidence is weak, and your body absorbs almost no chrysin from supplements anyway. So I would not expect your cholesterol control to suffer. Still, since chrysin has no proven benefit and you are on a heart-health medicine, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Niacin, Simvastatin page

“Simcor combines niacin with simvastatin to lower cholesterol, and its interaction list deserves genuine care. Simvastatin is cleared by the CYP3A4 enzyme, and well over a hundred of these ingredients can push its blood level up or drag it down through that pathway.”

About Chrysin

What is Chrysin?

  • Bodybuilding and testosterone support
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidant support
  • Prostate health

Chrysin is a plant flavonoid sold mainly as a bodybuilding supplement claimed to raise testosterone or block estrogen, but human studies have not shown these benefits, largely because the body absorbs very little of it. Evidence for its other proposed uses is mostly limited to laboratory and animal research, so its real-world value is unclear. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
