Cinchona and Quizartinib

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS

Why this applies to Quizartinib

Quizartinib falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Cinchona interacts with.

Theoretically, taking cinchona with other QT interval-prolonging drugs might cause an additive effect and increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
Quinidine and quinine, which are constituents of cinchona, prolong the QT interval.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know if you take Vanflyta (quizartinib), a leukemia medicine that carries a serious warning about affecting your heart's rhythm. Quizartinib is already known to lengthen what we call the QT interval, which is the time it takes your heart to reset between beats. Cinchona bark contains quinine and quinidine, and both of those can stretch that same interval too.

Stacking two QT-prolonging things together could add up and, in the worst case, trigger a dangerous irregular heartbeat. I'll be honest that this concern is based on how these compounds work, not on solid studies pairing the two, so it's more of a precaution than a proven event. Still, with a drug this closely monitored, please don't add cinchona without checking with your oncology team or pharmacist first.

“Quizartinib (Vanflyta) treats a form of acute myeloid leukemia and already carries a known risk of disturbing the heart's rhythm, so the supplements on this page deserve genuine caution, starting with the eight rated major. Most of the 146 ingredients on file, 121 of them, can shift quizartinib's blood level through the CYP3A4 enzyme t…”

About Cinchona

What is Cinchona?

Cinchona
  • Malaria (historical/traditional)
  • Fever
  • Leg cramps and restless legs
  • Digestive upset and loss of appetite
  • Bitter tonic

Cinchona bark is the natural source of quinine and has been used for centuries to treat malaria and fever, but the bark itself is not standardized and can be unpredictable and risky. Modern medicine uses purified, dose-controlled quinine instead, and the supplement form carries real dangers, including serious heart and blood problems. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy.
