Here's the simple version: deutetrabenazine (Austedo) already tends to make people feel drowsy, tired, or a little slowed down, since it works on brain chemicals that affect movement and mood. Corydalis yanhusuo may have its own calming, sedative-like effects. Put the two together and those mellow feelings could potentially stack up, leaving you more sleepy, foggy, or unsteady on your feet than usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It's theoretical, based mostly on how Corydalis behaves in lab and animal studies, not on solid human data. So it may not amount to much for many people. Still, since both can dampen the nervous system, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't stop or change your Austedo on your own.

Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the basic idea with Austedo (deutetrabenazine). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medicine down and clear it out. Corydalis yanhusuo (which contains berberine) may slow that same enzyme. If the enzyme works slower, less of the drug gets cleared, so levels in your blood could creep up and its effects get stronger.

For deutetrabenazine, higher levels could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, depression or mood changes, restlessness, or a slower than usual heart rhythm. That said, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not proven in people taking these two together. Still, since the drug label already limits dosing for people who clear it slowly, I'd run this by your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Deutetrabenazine Used For?

Brand name: Austedo

Deutetrabenazine (brand names Austedo XR and Austedo) is approved for adults to treat two conditions: chorea associated with Huntington's disease (the involuntary, jerky movements caused by Huntington's) and tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled, repetitive movements that often develop after long-term use of certain psychiatric medications).

Both Austedo XR (extended-release tablet) and Austedo (tablet) are approved for these same uses in adults. The two products differ in their dosing schedule and how they are taken, but both target the same conditions.
