Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in products like Benylin and Theraflu. Corydalis contains berberine, which lab studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, dextromethorphan could clear out of your system less efficiently and build up a bit higher than usual.

In plain terms, that might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy or restless. I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical, based on how the chemicals behave in the lab rather than proven in people. Since your body partly relies on that pathway to clear dextromethorphan, the theory is that levels could creep up a bit if you take both together.

If that happened, you might notice more of dextromethorphan's usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling a little spacey or off-balance. Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
